Over the past year and a half, Aya has achieved her Silver Duke of Edinburgh award.
This is an internationally recognised award that challenges young people to dream big and discover their potential.
The award has four different categories with all participants having to complete a sporting, volunteering, skill and adventurous journey section.
Aya has achieved her award through her participation in both basketball and handball with Aya heading overseas to represent NZ in handball soon. She achieved her skill section through her cello practice and the volunteering section at Catholic Social Services.
One of the most notable parts of the awards are the adventurous journeys.
This involves up to 3 days and 2 nights where students get out on an exploration in an unfamiliar and challenging environment with an agreed team goal.
Aya completed two practice journeys at Whare Flat and Mount Cook last year before her final 3 day trip at Glenorchy last year where she conquered Ben Lomond, the Routeburn and Mount Judah.
The award is a reflection of lots of hard work, dedication and perseverance. An absolutely massive achievement, well done Aya!
