Oliver wrote his song He Ara Whakamua (A New Way Forward) in response to reading what Pope Francis had said about needing a new way forward. "I thought back to how New Zealand all worked together last year during Covid and wrote about how we need a new way forward in these times"
Caritas runs the songwriting competition each year and Kavanagh's year 10 music students always put in strong submissions. Caritas said that: "the theme for 2021 is a new way forward. Ever since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic the world has changed. We are faced with the challenge of finding a new way forward. There is a real need for love, justice and peace to be at the heart of any change as we have come to see so clearly that we are all part of the one global family".
Oliver has won $100 to donate to Caritas as well as $400 to spend on his music which he has said he will split with Anamika who sang the song for him. His song can be heard here https://caritas.org.nz/singout4justice
Congratulations! We are very proud of you.
