MILLERS FLAT 7s TOURNAMENT
BY MATUA LUCAS
Last weekend our Trinity College Year 7 Rugby team attended the annual Millers Flat 7s tournament that features clubs and schools from the Central and Southern rugby sub-unions. The last time we attended this event was in 2014 when Mr Haig and Matua Lucas were coaching rugby together at Kavanagh College. 11 seasons on and the tournament has grown in size but has not lost its friendly country atmosphere. It was a fine and frosty start to the day with the team playing its first game in -2°C versus the Central Hinds - an all girls team from Alexandra and Cromwell. Young Henry Burke, played a cameo in this game while some of the team were still arriving and made a great tackle and carried the ball strongly. Henry is a Year 3 student at St Joseph’s Cathedral School and younger brother of Jack.
As the day warmed up, the team got into their work and started playing some very good rugby. A feature of the boy’s high tempo playing style was slick passing and stoic defense. Unbeaten in the pool round after four games, the team met a quality Menzies College team in the semi-final. A feature of this victory was furious tackling and quick hands. The team played some outstanding footy and won 20 - 5. Wakatipu from Queenstown were the opposition in the Grand Final. This game turned into an epic ding-dong with both teams equally matched in skill and speed. Wakatipu scored early in the first spell and our boys hit back with a clever team try to tie the game. Halftime came and went and the second half was a classic final - tight and tense. Just on full-time, Wakatipu scored the winner. Final score was 5 - 10.
A huge well done goes to our team who displayed outstanding character all day. Millers Flat 7s team 2024: Charlie Sutherland; Eamon Henderson; Henry Burke; Isaac Jago; Jack Burke; James Cooper; Jake Lucas; Louis Thompson; Mason Lynch; Max Morgan and Tommy McEntyre.
The team have a number of 15-aside fixtures coming up including Taieri College, Otago Māori, Cromwell College and Mt Aspiring College. Lastly, thank you to our dedicated coaches for supporting the team - Chris Burke, Ox Eathorne, Tim Lucas and Tony McEntyre.
