Principal's Message

Kia ora, Talofa lava, Malo e lelei
We farewelled two groups of students this week. The annual Year 10 Te Reo Māori class trip to Glenorchy and Paradise headed away to discover some of the important cultural aspects of our southern region, and the 3x3 Basketball team left for Auckland where they are competing in a national tournament through until Saturday. These extra experiences for students are all part of a holistic education and, although as adults we often worry about time out of the classroom, the growth that young people gain from challenging themselves in new environments can’t be underestimated. I also acknowledge and thank the adults who take time away from their families and jobs to accompany these trips – we truly appreciate your contribution to our college community.
This Saturday, after an original postponement in February, the Dominican Order who contributed so much to the eventual establishment of Kavanagh College, will celebrate 150 years of education in Dunedin. Please feel free to join the head students and some staff at the Celebration Mass at 10am at Mosgiel Parish Church.
I look forward to seeing many of you (with surnames A-L) in the first of our learning interviews next Wednesday afternoon and evening, and the rest of our year 10-13 parents and students the following Wednesday. You should by now have made your booking for next Wednesday. Please check your emails or contact the office if you feel you may have missed this communication.
We enter Holy Week next week in preparation for Easter Sunday. By the end of next week, students from all year levels will have been led through the Stations of the Cross and Reconciliation. Talking about this would be a good conversation to have with your children as part of their ongoing recognition of this period within the Church, so they remember that it is not just all about the chocolate!
Gracious God, you have heard the cries of your suffering people. You have sent Jesus to us to be our Redeemer and brother. Give us the courage to be your hands and heart for those who are in pain. Give us the wisdom to speak out for justice and righteousness. Amen.
