Yesterday's sports prizegiving showcased a lot of talent across a wide spectrum of sporting codes in 2018. Congratulations to all students who were recognised and especially to our team(s) of the year - the Girls' and Boys' Curling teams - on winning the nationals (a rare feat for any co-ed school to have both a boys and girls team as national champs in the same code). Special mention to the captain of the boys' team, Jayden Bishop, who also made the NZ U21 Curling Team, an outstanding achievement. Nick Parata was named Sportsperson of the Year. Nick has had a phenomenal year in hockey and he has also given so much to sport at Kavanagh in terms of supporting and coaching teams in the College. Guest speaker was Holly Robinson, NZ Para athlete in javelin. As a West Coast girl from Hokitika, her story of courage and perseverance was inspirational and right on point for aspiring athletes.
Next Thursday is senior prizegiving and there will be much to celebrate as we acknowledge student academic achievement this year. We are also in the final processes of selecting our Head Students for 2019. The final nine students are being interviewed today by members of the Board and our Chaplain Father Sani. Their feedback will go into the mix with staff and student input. It's always exciting and it highlights the calibre of aspiring young leaders we have in the College. Best wishes to all of our final candidates.
Yesterday the Oamaru community received the sad news of a young lady who was killed in an apparent hit and run motor incident. As a Year 10 student at St Kevin's College, our thoughts and prayers go out to her, her family and the staff and students of our sister Catholic school. Please keep them all in your prayers.
