Restoring and Recycling Bikes for Rangatahi
By Administration | Posted: Thursday July 25, 2024
We run an after-school bikes@syd programme on Tuesdays from 3.30pm - 5.30pm for rangatahi aged 12 - 24 with our Bikes Youth Worker supporting rangatahi attending these workshops.
Each year at least 500 bicycles go into landfill. Southern Youth Development works with rangatahi to collect bicycles from the landfill to restore, recycle, and gift them back out to people who need them.
This programme provides rangatahi with a means of transport, lifelong skills for maintaining and repairing bikes, proper tool use, an appreciation for waste minimisation practices, and an understanding of mechanical systems.
The programme encourages rangatahi to take ownership of their social well-being, be aware of their environmental impact, and develop employable skills while bringing cost-effective, low-energy-intensity travel solutions to the wider community.
