Principal's Message

Kia ora tātou, Talofa lava, Malo e lelei

It is hard to believe we are halfway through the year already. When we return from the school holidays, the days will be lengthening, spring bulbs will be above ground, our senior students will be thinking about externals and planning for what next year may bring, and our staff and board will be starting to plan for 2022. During this week I have enjoyed the company of some special year 7 & 8 students who have accompanied me to many of our contributing primary schools. Talking with the children in our Catholic schools is a reminder yet again of the wider Catholic whānau that we belong to. The step from one of our Catholic primary schools into Kavanagh College is seamless and natural – shared values, shared faith and shared expectations means that our young year 7s transition quickly and successfully. We are looking forward to our Open Day on August 8th when we will host families from around Dunedin as they step inside our place. Please encourage anyone who wants to come along for a look, to do so – they are all very welcome.

Tomorrow is our final assembly for the term when we will have seven of our year 13 boys and a secret guest shaving their hair, and we will also farewell Erika Fairweather and send her on her way to Tokyo with a blessing and our very best wishes.

Tomorrow, we also farewell Hector Natafali who has been working with us for the last two terms as a teacher’s aide in the year 7 area. Thank you for all your work, Hector. We also send Kerron Thomson on her way as she heads off into the ‘real world’ to take on a six month sabbatical granted through The Royal Society. Mrs Jean Allibone will be acting HOD Science until Kerron returns in term one next year.
