We’re going on a Bioblitz…...We’re not scared!

The Year 7 Science Classes explored the town belt as part of their learning this week, and there was much to see and do!
The Year 7 students ventured into the Town Belt for their Science lesson on Wednesday to carry out a Bioblitz, where living things are surveyed in an area over a short period of time. The students carried out a 5 minute bird count with the help from Maureen Howard, a Senior Education Coordinator for Town Belt Kaitiaki. There are around 20 bird species found in the Town Belt and many of these were identified during the day including piwakawaka and shining cuckoo. To survey the insects, the students learnt a technique from Otago PHD entomologist, Luna Thomas. They struck the plants with a special stick and the insects fell onto a beating sheet where they could be observed and identified. There was a lot of excitement as various insects were found including different types of spiders and caterpillars. The field trip was a wonderful citizen Science project for the students to be involved with and to engage with real life hands-on Science as part of their Surviving and Thriving unit of work this term.
