Invitation to join University of Otago Research Study: For students in Years 9 - 13

Kia ora tātou

We invite students in Year 9-13 to please consider being a part of our research study with the University of Otago | Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka.

Our research group want to talk to young people about how they might respond to a friend telling them that they had been abused. When a young person has experienced abuse, a friend is usually the first person they tell, but young people are often unprepared for these conversations. They may not know how to respond to their friend, and find that hearing about what has happened has an impact on their own well-being.

Our research is focused on understanding more about what young people might need in this kind of situation to keep themselves well, and to look after their friend. We will ask students about how they might talk to their friend, what would be important for them to do (and not do) in the situation, and what kinds of information or resources would be helpful for them.  We want to make sure that the resources we develop are going to be helpful for young people, and so we need their input.

One of our interviewers would meet with students individually, (at school, the university or on Zoom, depending on what works best for them), for about 40 minutes.  If you would like to be part of the study there are information pamphlets and consent forms at the office, or you can click this link to get more detailed information and request a pack:

We think this is important work that could make a difference to young people, and would welcome your involvement!
