The Stations of the cross, also known as the 'Way of the Cross' is a Christian devotion that commemorates the events of Good Friday. It consists of 14 stations, each representing a significant moment during Jesus’ journey from his condemnation to his crucifixion and burial.
The stations are:
Jesus is condemned to death.
Jesus takes up his cross.
Jesus falls for the first time.
Jesus meets his mother, Mary.
Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus carry the cross.
Veronica wipes the face of Jesus.
Jesus falls for the second time.
Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem.
Jesus falls for the third time.
Jesus is stripped of his garments.
Jesus is nailed to the cross.
Jesus dies on the cross.
Jesus is taken down from the cross.
Jesus is laid in the tomb.
This practise is observed particularly during Lent or Holy week. Catholics often pray and reflect on each station/event, meditating on the suffering and sacrifice of Jesus.
The Triduum is the three most important days in the Christian year, remembering the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus. It begins on Holy Thursday with the Last Supper, when Jesus shared a meal with his disciples and washed their feet. On Good Friday, we remember Jesus dying on the cross for us. Holy Saturday is a quiet day of waiting, leading to the Easter Vigil at night, when we celebrate Jesus rising from the dead. The Triduum ends on Easter Sunday, the joyful start of the Easter season.
