Our Year 12 Geographers were lucky to enjoy a stunning couple of days weather during their recent field trip to Aoraki Mount Cook. Visited the area allows our students to see first hand what they have been learning about for one of their external achievement standards, to collect data for their Geography Research internal assessment task, and to explore this special part of Aotearoa.
A great stop en-route was at the Clay Cliffs just out of Omarama. These amazing geological formations have featured in a number of movies including Mulan.
The walk up the Hooker Valley viewing all the glacial features was a highlight, with the end view of Aoraki Mount Cook making the effort worthwhile.
Collecting data for the students Geographic Research involved a tough climb up a very steep track to the Red Tarns. The group stopped at five different altitudes to collect a range of data in relation to vegetation, climate, relief and soil.
Lectures from DOC's Matt on glaciation and human impacts, and a look at the Tasman Glacier and Lake, rounded out a very successful trip.
