Social Justice in Action
Greetings, Kia ora, Talofa, Malo e lei
Welcome back to Term 2. It was great to see all the student’s smiling faces this week adding vibrancy to the College grounds.
An important aspect of our Special Character is social justice and raising awareness of local and global issues. This year the Caritas Challenge focus is the South Sudan where there have been crippling food shortages. Kavanagh, along with all the Catholic contributing schools, is having a South Sudan awareness day to encourage empathy and understanding with people who live with much less than ourselves. We will be supporting this cause next Tuesday, 7th May by having a day with no electricity, no technology and only bread to eat. We will be supplying the bread and are encouraging students to donate the equivalent of the cost of their lunch to the Caritas cause.
The College production of Annie is underway next week. Tickets for performances on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday night are available from the Bursars office. Prices are adults $18, school children $10 and under 5’s are free. As in the past we have also invited our contributing schools to matinee performances, something they very much enjoy.
Otago Youth Wellness came up to the College yesterday to look at our sensory room. This is an initiative from our Health Prefects. It is a small, quiet space with a lower level of lighting along with some sensory aids like playdough. It replaces our old sick bay.
Next Monday, 6th May is a busy day for our Senior School. Year 13 have the Tertiary Open Day where students are invited to attend and look around the University and Polytechnic campus. Year 12 have the Sophie Elliot “Forget me not” programme on healthy relationships run by the NZ Police and many Year 11’s will be involved in a Duke of Edinburgh First Aid Course.
God Bless
