Four teams led by Gerard Mullins went to the 3 x 3 Basketball National Slam tournament in Tauranga in late March.
Heading off to Tauranga were four teams - junior girls, senior girls, junior boys and senior boys helped by referee Nadia Uriaro.
On the court, all four teams played well and competed strongly against very tough competition. It was great to expose our players to the best players and teams in the country. The Kavanagh teams equipped themselves well and showed great improvement both individually and as teams. Our best result was our Junior Girls team who won their way through to their final after an exceptional win in the semi-final against St Mary’s Ponsonby. In the final, they played against and were beaten by Melville College. Second place in the country is a great result. This team was made up of Annabelle Ring, Piata Rapata-Hanning, Kyra McEntyre, Anita Samasoni and Dre Whaanga
Off the court, the group had an excellent trip and tournament. After games on Friday we spent time at Papamoa Beach and after the tournament had finished on Saturday the whole group climbed up Mount Maunganui and then went to the hot pools. Our sincere thanks to Head Coach Gerard Mullin, and parents Mereana Rapata-Hanning and Pete Gallagher for their time and effort. Thanks also go to the teachers Mike Waterworth and Iris Bugarski who accompanied them.
