Special Character in Action Across the Week

A special reflection from our Special Character Prefects, Beatrice and Charlotte.

Hello everyone

We have finally reached the end of this long term but at the same time it feels like it has just flown by. We have had such an awesome term with some great events that have happened.

Last Thursday night some year 13 students participated in the Caritas Challenge where we slept in boxes for the night. We started by making our shelters outside while Matua made our rice for dinner, and then had our prayer which included us eating our rice in silence, acknowledging that this is people's lives and standing in solidarity with them, and understanding how privileged we are with all we have in our lives. After dinner, we played some games outside and in the gym before heading off to bed. Waking up the next morning with an amazing sunrise. It was a great experience for all of us. For our fundraiser keep sending in your donations and all our challenges will take place the first week of next term.

On Tuesday we also celebrated Mercy Day, and the feast of Our Lady of Mercy, along with the primary schools; St Francis Xavier, St Bernadette's, St Bridget’s, and St Mary’s. Father Hook led us all in a mass in the auditorium where we also had two nuns in attendance. Afterward, we went outside for a sausage sizzle and some games in the gym. Mercy Day is celebrated every year on the 24th of September all over the world by the Sisters of Mercy and more. This is the day on which Catherine McAuley first opened the House of Mercy in Ireland and dedicated it to Our Lady of Mercy. This is a day to celebrate all the wonderful work Sisters of Mercy and their friends do around the world.

Prayer

E te Kaiwhakamārie – nurturing God:

You invite us to follow the Master, to hear the cries of the poor and the Earth, responding with tender love. May kindness be the answer we give to the ‘wicked’ problems of our age. Let the Spirit of Jesus empower us to look outwards and beyond ourselves.

As we remember Catherine McAuley this month on the anniversary of her death, we pray that she too will be declared a saint, inspiring women and men of our time by the witness of her tender love for the poor. Amen.

Have a safe and restful holiday and we look forward to seeing you next term!

Ka Kite,

Charlotte and Beatrice
