Kahui Ako Working with the iDeal Approach to Improve Literacy

This week we have had the pleasure of Darnelle Darlison from iDeal to come into both primary and intermediate classes across the Catholic schools.
Darnelle visited Trinity Catholic College on Tuesday, where she modelled teaching and observed teachers who have been trialling Structured Literacy for 2023. The approach provides explicit teaching of spelling, writing/reading fluency and syntax skills.
Darnelle also hosted a parent evening educating us about the science behind reading and the benefits of the approach. In addition, she provided ideas for parents to support their children at home.
For 2024, the Kahui Ako are looking forward to supporting students who need support with Structured Literacy, so they can continue to build confidence in their literacy skills.
