Enviroschools Hui

A wonderful opportunity for our ākonga to interact with the moana came recently at the Enviroschools Hui.

On Friday 29th November Evie, Isabel, Levi and Justine had an action packed day at the Enviroschools Hui, based out in Port Chalmers, investigating how we interact with the moana. We visited the amazing new Marine Museum and considered how the Port's role has evolved as shipping has changed over time.  We gathered footage from a submerged baited underwater camera, just off the jetty in Carey's bay.

Did you know we have shark in the harbour? We cooked and sampled Undaria - Wakame an introduced pest seaweed, and most found it really tasty!  We then had a boat building challenge using material from harekeke - flax to float an object. Discussed safety on the water - role of Coast Guard and harbourmaster AND even got to go on a short boat trip to see Quarantine Island and the wildlife.
