On Saturday, June 22, Trinity entered a team in the Otago/Southland Chess Championships. The competition is a gruelling seven rounds of intense chess played over 6 hours. Our players were:

  • Board 1 Henry Le

  • Board 2 Ethan Then

  • Board 3 Joseph Kelly

  • Board 4 Louis Le

Trinity competed well, winning three matches, drawing three, and only losing one team match out of 7 rounds.

Some of the outstanding results from the included:

  • Henry beating the top player from LPHS A with a superbly calculated fight back after being down on material

  • Joseph being named as the top Board 3 player for the tournament with 6.5 points out of 7.

  • The Trinity team drawing with the two top seeds: LPHS A and Kings A.

Overall, Trinity placed fourth from 15 teams in the region, only losing a place in the top 3 due to an arcane new rule!

Congratulations to our team for another strong performance. We look forward to seeing what this young team can do in future years.
