Proposed Changes to NCEA

Greetings, Kia ora, Talofa, Mālō e lelei

Last week the Minister of Education announced the NCEA Change Package.

The seven changes are:

  • Make NCEA more accessible
  • Mana ōrite mo te mātauranga Māori
  • Strengthen literacy and numeracy requirements
  • Have fewer, larger standards
  • Simplify NCEA’s structure
  • Show clearer pathways to further education and employment
  • Keep NCEA Level 1 as an optional level

You can read more about the changes at conversation.education.govt.nz/ncea

On a final note, to address misunderstanding or confusion about the changes, especially in regards to external assessment and integrated learning, the Ministry of Education has published some clarification on the Education Conversation website – conversation.education.govt.nz/ncea/mythbusters

As part of this package the Government has made the decision to abolish NCEA fees for Domestic Students. This includes the fee for Scholarship papers.

What this means for you - those that have paid the $76.70 fee (or the subsidy for Community Service Card holders) for 2019 will have this credited to your account.

If you have not yet paid, this amount will be deducted from your account. Please be aware that this may be take some time, so please do not be alarmed within the next few weeks if the amount is still showing as outstanding.

Study and Tutorial Support Opportunity

I am pleased to be able to remind parents of this great support available to students. Tutorials are run every Wednesday from 2.10 - 4.00pm in M 2.6. All students welcome and all subjects covered.

PPTA & NZEI National Strike Day

The full details of this strike day are in this weeks newsletter, with key details being the PPTA intents to hold a one-day national strike combined with the Primary School Teachers on Wednesday 29th May. While the school is officially open for instruction it is impossible to continue classes in the absence of the majority of staff. We will be able to provide some support and supervision for students if required. Please advise the school office in by 9.00am on Monday 27th May if you wish to use this supervision.

God Bless
