Principal's Message

Haere mai. Welcome back to College for Term 3.

There was some decent weather in patches during the break so I hope everyone got some valuable rest and family time. As most of you know I had some time away late last term after an eye injury and surgery. I'm pleased to report all is on track there and I am grateful for all the support and prayers I received. My thanks to teaching and support staff and my senior team for their perseverance and hard work getting through a very hectic but successful Term 2. The students weren't bad either! Well done Kav! 

Ahead there is, as usual, plenty on the school calendar including Kavanagh Day and the 75th Bishops Shield (drama, debating, oratory etc) to be hosted by St Peter's Gore. We are also having a special teacher only professional development day on Friday 17 August. This will allow all teachers and leaders across our Dunedin Catholic Schools Kahui Ako (Community of Learning) to come together and hear from distinguished guest speakers, network and share best practice through various workshops. We don't take this time lightly as Term 3 is critical for Years 11-13 as the countdown starts to get the core of their internal NCEA assessments completed and preparations for external exams. Tick tock.

On the sporting front, congratulations to our 1st XV rugby team who had a convincing win against Kings 2nd XV on Tuesday. Well done boys! 

Special Tribute: I would like to pay respects and offer our condolences to the Roberts whanau as their patriarch, Mr Karaka Roberts, passed away this week. Karaka was a significant presence in Maoridom and the wider community in Otakou (and nationally) as well as being a respected kaumatua of Kavanagh College and grandfather to Piata Rapata-Hanning in Year 11. Kua hīnga te totara i te waonui a Tāne (A great totara tree has fallen in the forest of Tāne). Rest in Peace.
