Junior Darts Nationals (Callum Westwood)

On the 12th July, I flew to Whakatane for the New Zealand Junior Darts Nationals, representing the Aoraki region with seven other students. Nationals consisted of four days of darts competition.

On the first day, the Youth Opens, I qualified for the knockouts with four out of five wins. My first knockout game was close, but I lost 2-3. The second day was the Junior Boys Pairs. My partner, Charlie MacDonald from Kings, and I qualified with four out of five wins and made it to the finals, where we lost 3-1, placing second. The third day was the Junior Boys Singles. Again, I qualified with four out of five wins but lost my first knockout game 2-1.

The last day included the Mixed Pairs and the tournament team playoff, where players are monitored over the week to determine their skill to see if they have what it takes to compete in a team. Without a partner from my region for the Mixed Pairs, I was paired with someone from a different region for the Constellations. My partner and I lost our first game 2-1. The tournament teams consist of two teams of five juniors and five youths each competing against each other. I was selected for the Blue Team, along with four others from my region. Our Blue Team lost to the Green Team. It was an amazing experience and I was proud of my efforts over the tournament.
