The year 12 History class went on an overnight trip on the 1st and 2nd of March to learn about the Chinese gold miners during the gold rush in 1961-1962.
We were lucky enough to have Sarah Gallagher who works as the Acting Area Manager For Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga able to join us for the majority of the trip and talk to us about how the Chinese were treated at the time.
We left Dunedin and traveled to Lawrence where we explored the Chinese Camp and visited the cemetery to see the history that has been preserved.
Next it was onto the Clyde dam lookout for lunch and we learned more about the impact water has had in Otago. Starting from the gold rushes to producing electricity and the fruit produced with the water from the rivers and lakes.
We explored Old Cromwell town and saw the impact of the Clyde dam. We then traveled to Queenstown and enjoyed dinner there. The next day we were lucky enough to have a tour of the Arrowtown Museum and a guided walk along the river with Amanda Viana from the Lakes Museum and Gallery. The students enjoyed gold panning and a few flecks of gold were found.
Many thanks to Ms. Cooney who joined us for the trip!!!
