Level One Commerce Field Trip

Students were fascinated by the chocolate-making process and commenced the day with a tour of the OCHO Cholocate Factory.
The cocoa beans are sourced from the South Pacific region, considering low food miles, and all ingredients are purchased from local producers. OCHO is the only 'bean-to-bar' factory in New Zealand. Students enjoyed sampling the chocolate at the end of the tour and were able to identify the different flavours in stages of production.
Our next stop was Toitū Otago Settlers Museum to participate in an online scavenger hunt for items related to early Commerce in Otago. Pesa Tili joined us on the field trip. His knowledge of the University of Otago campus area was appreciated as he showed the students around the Commerce building, central library, lecture theatres, cafeteria and clock tower.
After lunch, we visited Huntly Road Dairies in Outram. Anne-Marie and Duncan Wells are award-winning dairy farmers and explained how their farm operates. Students could see the link in the supply chain from milk to chocolate (primary sector to secondary sector). Seeing the beautiful dairy cows was a highlight for many, and it was a fun day of learning.
