Kavanagh College headed North to defend its national title in Wellington.
On 28th March 9 students and 2 staff headed North to Wellington to compete in the National Futsal Champs . The team went up with high expectations after winning the nationals the year before. The team was placed in pool A with schools from Hutt Valley High, Scots College, St Andrews College, and Glendowie College.
On Wednesday morning we played Glendowie College and beat them 4-3, in the afternoon game we beat a very good St Andrews team 6-5, so a good start to day one.
On Day 2 we started with another very tough game against Scots College, we managed to beat them by 1 goal also, we then played Hutt Valley high and had our first loss 4-2. This placed us 2nd in our pool on goal difference. We then had to play Hamilton Boys in the round of 16 games and we lost 3-1 effectively knocking us out of any top 8 finish.
On the last day of the tournament, we beat John McGlashan College on penalties which then took us through to the 11-12th playoff game against Wellington College who beat us comfortably. The standard of play was extremely high right throughout the tournament and any team could beat anyone on their day. St Pats played Napier Boys in the final with St Pats winning 5-1.
My Sincere thanks to Mr Tim Armstrong who came up as manager, and to everyone who helped with Fundraising to help get the team to Wellington. All in all a great trip and I hope the boys enjoyed the experience.
The team consisted of Tim O’Farrell, Max Johnston, Bryn Sinclair, Josh Lucas, Josh Hook, Josh Skyrba, Caleb Sharkey, Niko Cockerell, and Harold Chinula.
