ST MARY'S SCHOOL MILTON and ST MARY'S SCHOOL MOSGIEL

Week one of the new term started has started well at the college and yesterday we welcomed students from St Mary's Milton and St Mary's Mosgiel to Kavanagh College for The Big Day Out.

The students were full of energy and were met by Mr Ian Adamson who brought the students to the computer lab for a digital technology session. Ngā Motu The Islands is a Māori biome or world in Minecraft that is set in a remote part of Aotearoa New Zealand 250 years ago. The students completed two digital technology challenges and produced some fantastic work. St Mary's Milton student, Paddy Hickey, loved the Minecraft experience and showed his understanding of the game and created an intricate wharenui or meeting house using traditional blocks and materials that are unique to this biome. Year 7 & 8 teacher from St Mary's Mosgiel, Mrs Lisa Matheson, also showed off her Minecraft skills. Mrs Matheson has recently completed an online Minecraft course. She has also been taught on a regular basis by the experts - the students! After a delicious morning tea, it was off to the Christian Brothers gymnasium for a high intensity Physical Education lesson before returning to ngā rorohiko (the computers) to finish off the Mahimania (Minecraft) challenge.

Head of Science, Mrs Kerron Thomson, taught the students for an afternoon hands-on science lesson where they conducted a number of melting and combustion experiments. Thank you to the following Kavanagh College students (some of whom are former St Mary's Mosgiel students) who assisted as mentors: Heath & Boyd Middleton, Johanna O'Neill, Atu Maiono, Jayden Tomlinson, Eden Webb, Rishi Shantapriyan and Leah Olsen.

Sacred Heart, St Mary's Dunedin and St Francis Xavier schools will be visiting the college in week three.
