Last Thursday, 22 Trinity Catholic College students spent the day immersed in Shakespearean drama as they participated in the regional Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival.
Eight schools and approximately 125 students from across Dunedin presented eighteen 5-minute student-directed scenes and three 15-minute teacher-directed scenes. Trinity entered four different 5-minute scenes in the festival:
King Lear - Tim Lapham, Sophie Golden, Chloe Farr, Isobel McKewen, Henry Lapham, Grzegorz Twardowski, Alice O’Connor
Much Ado About Nothing - Amalie Latton, Michael Louw-Young, Meila McCartney
Othello - Troy Kubala, Jeremy Meikle, Oliver Lodge, Ted Kerr-Bell, Christopher Caulton, Meadow Stewart, Nuala Kelly, Grzegorz Twardowski, Henry Lapham, Isaac Tili, Sam Kelly
The Tempest - Phoebe Harris, Sam Kelly, Isaac Tili, Charlotte Harris plus musicians Serenity Hook and Oliver Lodge
The students all performed wonderfully well and we were very proud of them.
Two of our four scenes (Othello and The Tempest) made it through to the final showcase in the evening which was a fantastic achievement and our students received a number of awards:
Denise Walsh Memorial Trophy for the Best Ensemble - Trinity Catholic College (Othello)
Notable Performance Award - Amalie Latton
Notable Performance Award - Isaac Tili
Best Student Director - Ted Kerr-Bell (Othello)
Runner-Up - Direct Entry to NSSP (National Shakespeare Schools Performance) - Amalie Latton
Special thanks to Erica Ward for all the time and effort she put into helping the students prepare for this event, and also to Rebecca Meikle, Sara Georgie and Richard McNaught for their assistance.
