The Otago Debate Team Wins Nationals

Congratulations to Ché McGivern (Year 11) and the Otago team for their phenomenal performance over the weekend. They challenged the best debaters in Aotearoa and took first place.

Otago has not won the Championship since 2003 and this is the first time a team from outside Auckland or Wellington has won since 2012.

Ché was also celebrated for his brilliant performance as he was awarded a promising speaker award. This is given to three students not in their last year of school but have shown immense promise over the tournament.

Watching Ché with his classmates via livestream on the final day of the competition was an absolute pleasure. Our day kept getting better and better when we heard his team made the semis, the finals and then we got to see him compete in the finals in the Beehive!

Trinity Catholic College is so proud to hear of his team's success. We are excited to see what the rest of the 2024 debate calendar will bring with regional semi-finals and Bishop Shield to come!
