Why do we need to talk about Roblox?

Roblox is a place where children go online and enjoy metaverse experiences so what do parents need to consider?
Children often see their offline and online lives as the same, or at least similar so their avatars are usually extensions of themselves. Roblox transports players into the virtual world where they can explore with friends. Maintaining a safe environment within Roblox which has over 24 million experiences for players comes with challenges. Moderation is difficult for any online community and this one is no exception. Players can still be exposed to graphic violence or explicit content and children are vulnerable since this platform is marketed towards them.
The Trinity online safety hub has an article comparing Roblox with Minecraft but it still comes down to conversations with children about the importance of not accepting offers of free virtual times in exchange for performing tasks (that may be inappropriate or sexualised) or sharing personal information. This is the same as being wary of a stranger on a real-life street offering them gifts in exchange for favours. It is part of our ongoing work with our children to see the parallels between behaviours online and real life.
