This is the second article in our series celebrating the achievements of our Year 7 and 8 cohort at Trinity Catholic College.

DAVID HOLA - Basketball and Touch (Year 8)

Thanks for chatting to us David.

How have you enjoyed sport at Trinity so far? What sports do you play for school?

The year is going really well. We are unbeaten in basketball. I play basketball, touch, rugby and volleyball for Trinity.

Outside of school what are your sporting/training commitments?

Southern training for rugby. I also do lots of running and body weight training with my brother. I have Yr 9/10 basketball and 7/8 Basketball Academy training too.

You have represented Otago in Basketball and Touch. Tell us a little bit about this.

Really happy to make these teams as there were lots of great players.

Basketball U13 - We had tournaments in Ashburton, Timaru and Oamaru. We were 1st place in Timaru and Oamaru.

Touch - U12 tournaments in Timaru and Christchurch. These were tough tournaments.

What are some challenges you have faced in sport, David?

Injuries, and then some tough individual performances. It's great having my teammates around me when there are hard times.

Sport is very rewarding, what are some of the highlights you have experienced?

Making the top Basketball Otago team and making the touch team at a young age are highlights. I also love making my family proud after a good performance.

Leadership and sportsmanship are very important. If people were to watch David Hola play sport what skills and attributes would they see?

Lifting my teammates in the tough times or when mistakes have been made. Always speak positively and offer feedback in the game.

How can students at Trinity show the 4 core school values on the sports field/ court?

Always treat people how you would want them to treat you.

Who are your role models and why? What are your sporting goals?

Mum and Dad are my main role models.

I want to be an All Black. A basketball scholarship to a University would be great too.

Favorite pre and post competition foods?

After games bananas are great for recovery, I will eat anything though.

If you could give any advice to students wanting to achieve in their chosen sport(s) what would it be?

Whatever you think you can do just go for it.  Always believe in yourself.

SOPHIE MEGGET - Diving (Year 8)

Thanks very much for your time here Sophie.

How have you enjoyed sport at Trinity so far? What sports do you play for school?

It's really fun to do the sports at Trinity. I have loved playing Basketball this year and I want to keep trying new things.

Outside of school what are your sporting/training commitments?

Training for diving was 3 days a week at Moana pool.

You have represented Otago in Diving Sophie, congratulations. Tell us a little bit about this.

I have represented Otago at Nationals at U14 level. I gained a gold in the skills diving section.

I have traveled to Wellington and Hamilton for main meets. These were great experiences.

What are some challenges you have faced in your diving career and how have you overcome these?

Overthinking things on the board when I am about to dive. The coaches and supporters have a lot of confidence in us though which really helps.

Sport is very rewarding, what are some of the highlights you have experienced?

Making friends in the diving community and getting really good coaches, everyone is really supportive. Executing a new skill or dive is really rewarding. I'm also really proud of the diving competitions because I always try my best.

Leadership and sportsmanship are very important. If people were to watch Sophie Megget play sport what skills and attributes would they see?

I always support my competitors, I want to see them do well.

How can students at Trinity show the 4 core school values in the pool?

Always show good sportsmanship and be grateful and humble for positions gained and rewards you get. Always support your team.

Who are your role models and why? What are your sporting goals?

My Mum and Dad are always helping me and have been coaching me the whole time. They teach me skills in and out of the pool. I want to achieve as best I can.

What are your favorite pre and post competition foods?

I love celery and peanut butter. It's my favorite. I always try to eat healthy.

If you could give any advice to students wanting to achieve in their chosen sport(s) what would it be?

If you have talent, use it and don't waste it. Find something that makes you happy. Always be yourself.
