Principal's Message

Greetings, Tēnā koutou
Wow! What a show! I was privileged to watch our ‘Grease’ performance last night and was very impressed. Sadly due to Level 2 restrictions, there could only be an audience of one hundred and I know so many people are disappointed to have missed out, but the momentum and energy that carries a show to opening night just couldn’t be sustained much longer. However, you will be pleased to know that the audience of 100 made sure they had the energy and applause of 400! I mentioned to staff yesterday that our production crew of staff, students and helpers have been the ultimate role models for all the attributes we want our young people to have – adaptability, collaboration, perseverance, and resilience. When most schools around the country put their productions in the ‘too hard basket’, Kavanagh carried on and made it work. I would like to thank Erica Ward, Georgie Watts, and their team of committed staff for again going out of their way to provide excellence in the arts and contribute to the wellbeing of our students.
Next week, tournament week also continues but with many more layers of health and safety planning than we have had in the past, and with the competition only being regional. All the best to our netball, football and hockey teams heading to tournament next week. Excellence in sport as well as in the arts is all about digging deep, preparing well, training hard and, again, using those attributes I mentioned above.
Excellence in academics also requires students to dig deep, prepare well and train hard. Our suspended timetable week in week 8 is coming up fast and students need to be preparing well and training hard now. It has been an unsettled year for all, but we cannot use this as an excuse for not working to the best of our ability. With the uncertainty of the next few months, these practice exams for our seniors are potentially more important than ever. Please ensure that your young people at home are preparing well for these exams. Do not buy into the argument that they do not really count anyway - the old adage ‘failing to prepare is preparing to fail’ still has a lot going for it!
