Kavanagh Girls Basketball
By Gerard Mullin | Posted: Monday September 10, 2018
Our Kavanagh College senior girls’ team travelled to Westport for the single A South Island qualifying tournament.
Basketball ranks schools on size and our tournament was restricted to schools with a coeducational Year 9-13 roll of up to 600 pupils or a single sex school of up to 300 pupils.
We played and won all five games in the round robin competition thus emerging as South Island champions. Whilst each player contribution was vital to the overall result, coach Gerard Mullin made special mention of the performances of Dre Whaanga and Annabelle Ring.
The team will head to the National single A tournament in Palmerston North at the end of this month. Our thanks go to our coach Gerard Mullin. Gerard is an outstanding technical coach, his planning is meticulous and his focus on teamwork lead to increased unity both on and off the court. We were incredibly well fed and encouraged by Jennie Crawshaw. Our thanks too to Mike Waterworth, teacher in charge of basketball, for his organisation, fundraising and ongoing support.
