Principal's Message

Greetings

I had the pleasure of attending the National Catholic Secondary School Principals’ Conference from Sunday to Tuesday this week, where Joy Cowley joined us as our keynote speaker. Although this is a very busy time and it was tempting to remain at school working on the ever growing list of things that need to happen before the end of the year, I consider this to be one of the most important annual gatherings I can attend. Our sense of purpose is loud and clear at this conference and it is a privilege to have the time to gather support from one another, and recharge and renew our mission as principals of Catholic Colleges. Similarly, as the pace of life for all of us picks up during the next few weeks in the countdown to Christmas, we can be in danger of losing sight of what is truly important – the reason for the season. This year, I am also aware of the contrast between the special, more relaxed time many of us enjoyed during lockdown, and the frantic end of year madness. As a Catholic community, let us remember to find the Christ in Christmas, reflect on what is important, and give our time generously to those closest to us.

The Year 8 campers are away in Pukerau this week and I know they have been looking forward to this experience for quite some time. The Year 10 campers head away to four different venues and activities around Otago and Southland next week. Thank you to all the parents who attend the camps and to the staff who give up so much time away from their own families to create these memorable experiences for our students.

We are looking forward to this year’s pantomime – where does our performing arts team find their energy?! It isn’t long since Grease was finally performed and in the meantime Erica Ward and her team have written a new show, auditioned students and created another masterpiece. I look forward to seeing you there.

As I have already mentioned, the lead up to Christmas is upon us, and with it is Advent – an important preparation time in the Churches liturgical calendar. On the first Sunday of Advent, the first purple candle (symbolising hope) on the advent wreath is lit. This candle is typically called the "Prophecy Candle" in remembrance of the prophets, primarily Isaiah, who foretold the birth of Christ.

Have a wonderful weekend.
