Amazing Leadership Opportunity in Samoa

Trinity Catholic College Special Character Prefect Charlotte Harris was selected for the Future Leaders Academy recently, and enjoyed an amazing learning opportunity in Samoa.

Hi Everyone

I’m Charlotte, a Year 13 student and one of the Special Character Prefects. In the second week of the holidays I went to Samoa, for Future Leaders Academy. This is a leadership program, with 40 students from across New Zealand and Australia, as well as 12 students from the local country. While in Samoa we did a range of activities in groups/syndicates. We did a beach clean up, and worked on some projects that could realistically be implemented in Samoa. We learnt a lot about the issues faced in Samoa including cost of living and lack of nutritional information. It was really important for us as future leaders to understand the steps in coming up with a project, and any obstacles that might get in the way.

Another day activity we did was an Umu experience. We went to a local plantation and were taught how to open coconuts and get to drink from a coconut we had opened ourselves. Then we moved on to the Umu where we learnt about Samoan culture and made our own Umu. As well as this we also spent a lot of time swimming and exploring the markets.

Over the course of the trip we made so many life long connections and awesome memories. We gained memorable leadership skills. Overall it was an incredible experience and I would encourage anyone who is interested to have a look into it themselves!
